Molière Citation recipient President Macron of France engages in magical thinking as he leads the disastrous move for unilateral disarmament for Israel.
Unless he has some secret agreement with Iran to withhold arms shipments to Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi rebels in Yemen, it’s a non-starter.
It’s a wonder to the Molière team that anyone in the nuclear age can operate on the flawed assumption that withholding arms from a single nation fighting for its life against multiple neighboring nations (all armed and supplied by one source – Iran) is a winning strategy for peace.
If anything, depriving Israel from replenishing conventional weapons will increase, not decrease, the likelihood of all-out war (including the use of nuclear weapons). Yes, that sounds extreme, but them’s the facts.
The mission of Molière Citations is to call out stupidity and arrogance among public figures, and Mr. Macron fits the bill.
Speaking of nuclear threats, what result can Macron expect in the event that Russia decides to deploy “tactical” nukes in Europe? Does he believe that the so-called “limited effect” weapons would actually do no harm to the French population?
As Americans, we honor the tradition we’ve had in our special relationship with France ever since their support in our own war of independence. And, to be sure, France is an ally in NATO as well as a treasured cultural and economic partner.
But Macron’s ill-advised announcement, if not outright antisemitic, belies his good faith in responding to the challenges facing the civilized world from the continued military conflict in the Middle East.
While we can hope that Mr. Macron will see the light and abandon this reckless course, for now we are constrained to award him the Molière Citation for pursuing this foolish foreign policy — and we encourage other nations involved to continue providing Israel with the means and methods to survive.
